This major covers community work, interpersonal and helping skills, cultural and gender dimensions, social policy, social research, leadership and management, and challenges students to consider viewing and solving societal issues from a number of perspectives.

Important notes

  • Students are required to complete a year-long professional placement unit of 400 hours.

    Clearances and/or Risk Management Protocols Required

    Students must apply for a Working With Children Check. Students are required to complete risk management protocols on commencement of their practicum.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply broad social science knowledge to a range of theoretical and practical contexts.
  2. Think critically to analyse, interpret and analyse complex social science knowledge and issues.
  3. Think creatively to generate and challenge knowledge in the social cultural space.
  4. Use digital technologies and related literacies to access, evaluate and synthesise relevant information from multiple sources.
  5. Communicate social science knowledge and ideas clearly, coherently and with independence.
  6. Demonstrate a global outlook with respect for culture, and diversity, including Indigenous cultural competence.

This major prepares the student to work as a human services worker, community worker and in leadership positions in some areas of the community services sector.
