About this PhD Unit Set
Research in Biological Sciences at the School of Science has been ranked as world class, focussing particularly on the interactions among different forms of flora and fauna, the environment and humans.
Working in a range of environments from woodlands to wetlands and the ocean, our researchers aim to improve the sustainable use of our natural environment in the face of urban development and climate change. Environmental Studies research at ECU concentrates on: Marine ecology; Freshwater ecology; Forest, woodland and wetland ecology; Wildlife and conservation biology; Systems biology; Ecophysiology; Ecological restoration; and Microbial ecology and genetics Specific postgraduate research topics related to the above topics are developed in conjunction with the postgraduate coordinator or potential supervisor. The School has a range of facilities, including laboratories, vehicles and vessels, field equipment, and state-of-the-art analytical chemistry facilities. The school also places a high emphasis on collaborations with industry, government agencies and not-for-profit organisations, which enhance the postgraduate experience.

Candidates enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy Integrated (J42) may be required to attend classes on more than one campus to complete the research training component of the course.

Candidates are expected to meet regularly with their supervisors as part of the supervised independent research component of the course.
