English Proficiency Bands
The English Proficiency Bands outline the minimum English language requirements that an applicant must meet in order to gain admission into a course. Each course is assigned an English Language Band appropriate to that course with all acceptable English Language Programs, English Language Tests and English Entry Pathways shown in each band. You can satisfy ECU's minimum English standard requirements through one of these means.

- General Courses (WA) - Year 12 General English grade C or better (includes English, Literature or English as an Additional Language/Dialect)
- IELTS Academic (including IELTS Academic UKVI) - Overall band minimum score of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0). Results are valid for two years
- International Baccalaureate - Higher level English grade 3 (2011) or grade 4 (2012 onwards) or a Standard Level (SL) grade of 4. Can be achieved through IB Certificate or IB Diploma. Note: IB Certificate does not satisfy ECU's minimum academic entry requirements for undergraduate entry
- International Institute of Business and Technology (IIBT) - Certificate IV in Academic English or Academic English IV with a minimum score of B2+ with no band less than B2+
- Interstate school leaver requirements are as per the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC) agreements
- Murdoch Institute of Technology (formerly Murdoch Language Institute) English for Academic Purposes (AEP) - Score of 60-65% or greater
- Navitas Academic English Level 3 (AE3) - Overall pass mark of 60%
- Occupational English Test (OET) - A minimum score of B or 350 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking). (Results are valid for two years only)
- Pearson English Test (PTE) Academic (including PTE Academic UKVI) - 52 with no scores less than 50. Results are valid for two years
- Perth International College of English (PICE) - Completion of PICE level 7
- Phoenix Certificate IV in English for Academic Purposes or Phoenix Academic English program - Overall CEFR B2+ with no band less than B2+
- Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) - A mark of 125 or greater in the STAT Written English component for tests completed prior to Feb 2010 and a mark of 110 or greater in the STAT Written English component for tests completed from Feb 2010
- Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent)
- Successfully completed 1.0 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher in the UK, Ireland, USA, NZ or Canada
- Successfully completed AQF Diploma or AQF Advanced Diploma (ECU will consider an incomplete Advanced Diploma where at least one year of full-time study has been completed)
- Successfully completed ECU Certificate IV course in Aboriginal Performance, Music or Music Theatre
- TOEFL iBT - Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17. NOTE: This test is no longer accepted from 26/07/23
- Universal English College - Academic English (AE5) with a Credit or Academic English (AE4) with a grade of A
- UNSW Institute of Languages - Combined Universities Language Test (CULT) at 65% or better
- Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) Course - A final school level of 4 or greater in English course studies in year 12 (WA English 2007), or a final scaled mark of at least 50 or a final school letter grade of A, B, or C in one English unit studied in year 12 at Stage 2 or above, or a final school letter grade of A in 1C and 1D English units studied in year 12 (includes English, Literature and English as an Additional Language/Dialect)
- Western Australian Tertiary Entrance Examination (TEE) Subjects - A final scaled mark of at least 50 or a final school letter grade of A, B, C, or D studied in year 12 (includes TEE English, TEE English Literature and TEE English as a Second Language)
- Western Australian Universities' Foundation Program (WAUFP) - English Language and Australian Cultural Studies (ELACS) score of 50 or greater
- Western Australian Wholly School Assessed Senior English - A final school letter grade of A, B or C studied in year 12

- Cambridge International GCSE (CIE IGCSE) - English as a Second Language (Syllabus 0510) at a grade B or above with a grade 2 in Speaking (oral) and Listening (Aural); or English as a First Language (Syllabus 0500) at a grade C or above; or English as a First Language (Syllabus 0522) at a grade C or above; or English as a Second Language (Syllabus 0511) at a grade B or above; or IGCSE/GCE O Level English Language (Syllabus 1123) at a grade C or above

- General Courses (WA) - Year 12 General English grade A will be considered for applicants seeking entry via ECU's experience based entry pathway only (includes English, Literature and English as an Additional Language/Dialect)
- Hawthorn English (Melbourne) Intensive Academic Preparation - Completion of the Intensive Academic Preparation with a minimum grade of C
- IELTS Academic (including IELTS Academic UKVI and IELTS Academic One Skill Retake) - Overall band minimum score of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0). Results are valid for two years. Note: IELTS Academic online test is not accepted
- International Baccalaureate Certificate/Diploma (2012 onwards) - A Higher Level (HL) grade of 3 or Standard Level (SL) grade of 4 in one of the following IB subjects is required English A: Literature; English A: Language and Literature; Literature and Performance; English A1; English A2; English B; or English B Pilot. - Pearson English Test (PTE) Academic (including PTE Academic UKVI) - 52 with no scores less than 50. Results are valid for two years. PTE Academic Online is not accepted.
- Perth International College of English (PICE) - Achievement of PICE English Level 7 (Upper Intermediate B)
- Phoenix Certificate IV in English for Academic Purposes or Phoenix Academic English program - Overall CEFR B2+ with no band less than B2+
- Phoenix English Proficiency Test (iPEPT Higher Ed) - Overall CEFR B2+ with no band less than B2+. ECU will accept this test until 1 July 2022
- PSB Academy Certificate in Academic English (CAE) Course - 60% or more in each of the 4 exams. Each of the 4 exams is of equal weighting
- PSB Academy Diploma of Infocomm Technology (DICT), Diploma in Network Defense and Forensic Countermeasures (DNDFC), or Diploma of Sport and Exercise Sciences (DSES)
- Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) - A grade of C or above in an accepted English subject (must be General (GEN) subject). Note: If studied between 2002 and 2020, a level of Sound Achievement (S) or above is required, and the subject must be a QCAA ‘Authority’ subject. Prior to 2002, the subject must be a ‘Board’ subject.
- Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT): A mark of 145 or greater in the STAT Written English component for tests completed prior to Feb 2010 and a mark of 140 or greater in the STAT Written English component for tests completed after Feb 2010
- South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) & Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET) - A grade of C− or above in an accepted 20 credit TAS English subject (2011) or a Subject Achievement Score of 10 or above in an accepted English HESSG or PES subject
- Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent)
- Successfully completed 1.0 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher in the UK, Ireland, USA, NZ, Canada or South Africa where the medium of instruction is English

- Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) - An award of Satisfactory Achievement (SA) or above (or P or above for HSC subjects) in an approved English subject.
- TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition - Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17. NOTE: This test is no longer accepted from 26/07/23
- TOEFL paper-based test (PBT) - Minimum score of 550, including Test of Written English of 5 or better. Results are valid for two years
- Universal English College - Academic English (AE5) with a Credit or Academic English (AE4) with a grade of A
- University of Technology Sydney (UTS) - Successful completion of the Insearch Academic English Program at Level 4 (AE4) or Level 5 (AE5)

- Completed primary and secondary education in New Zealand and NCEA Level 2 - Total of 8 level 2 or 3 literacy credits including 4 reading credits and 4 writing credits from specific standards in a range of NZQA English language-rich subjects, or completed Bachelor degree, or successfully completed 1.0 EFTSL of study at a postgraduate level in New Zealand

- Completed Bachelor degree (where the qualification is assessed as being comparable to an Australian Bachelor degree)

- Completed Bachelor degree from a Registered University (where the qualification is assessed as being comparable to an Australian Bachelor degree)
