Diploma of Environmental Health

Environmental health is a sub-discipline of public health that focuses on environmental dimensions of health. There is a growing demand for technicians who have the practical and theoretical knowledge and skills necessary to be employed in support roles to the environmental health directorates of state and local government organizations. The course prepares students to make a positive contribution to the health of communities. Students graduate with the ability to think critically about prevention and control of communicable and environmental disease and a range of other environmental health issues, to work independently and as part of a team, and plan and coordinate environmental health projects. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to gain 8 units advanced standing to the Bachelor of Health Sciences degree.

Practicum Requirement

Students undertake a professional placement unit which comprises a 140 hour placement in an environmental health department.

Duty of care

Students will be required to sign contracts and ensure duty of care and insurance issues are covered.

Attendance requirements

140 hours to be conducted in a workplace.

HST2116 Environmental Health Professional Practice forms part of the professionally-accredited degree in Environmental Health and details, skills and competencies need to be covered.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply specialised environmental health knowledge to technical and theoretical situations.
  2. Communicate environmental health knowledge, theoretical concepts and ideas to others.
  3. Show initiative and personal responsibility to plan, coordinate and evaluate environmental health projects and perform complex technical operations with independence.
  4. Think critically to analyse and synthesise environmental health information from multiple sources to evaluate unpredictable problems.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 2)

All applicants must meet the academic admission requirements for this course. The indicative or guaranteed ATAR is as published (where applicable) or academic admission requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • Year 12 completion or equivalent.

English Language requirement (Band 2)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • Year 12 General English grade C or better;
  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test; or
  • Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Non standard timetable requirements

On-campus students: HST2114 and HST2184 are only available to study online. Online students: Students will be required to attend a 140 hours of practicum with Local Government Authorities, and State Government Agencies.
