Master of Midwifery

Effective from 01-JAN-2025 : Code C93

This course is for midwives who want to apply a specialised body of knowledge to their professional practice. Throughout this course you will enhance your understanding of recent developments in your chosen area of midwifery and further develop your knowledge and understanding of research, critical thinking and evidence-based practice to lead improvements in the experiences of the women/pregnant persons.

Clinical or professional work placement Requirement

You must have successfully completed a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery or equivalent postgraduate midwifery study whereby you will have already completed the clinical requirements. There is no clinical or professional work placement in the the following core units: CLM6100 Clinical Leadership and Management MNP6107 Nursing Research Project CMC6100 Coaching and Mentoring in the Clinical Setting

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Critically reflect on a complex body of midwifery knowledge, research principles and methods to demonstrate mastery of midwifery.
  2. Apply critical thinking skills to investigate, evaluate and synthesise complex ideas, concepts and theories in authentic clinical situations.
  3. Apply communication and collaboration skills to analyse and design innovative contributions to professional midwifery practice.
  4. Use high level self-management skills to plan an evidence-based practice project.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 8)

  • Bachelor degree in a cognate discipline; or
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience.

English Language requirement (Band 4)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0);
  • Bachelor degree from a country specified in the Admissions Policy;
  • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at postgraduate level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience; or
  • Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to provide proof of current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Midwife Division 1. Academic admission requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following: Graduate Diploma in Midwifery; or Equivalent post graduate midwifery study.
