Master of Environmental Studies

The Master of Environmental Studies is a joint degree with Tokyo City University (TCU, Japan). This course will prepare students to explore global environmental problems and initiatives to contribute to a sustainable society. Students enrolling in this course will be required to complete one semester of study on location at TCU. They will also have the option of completing a 2-week internship in Japan during their course. In the final semester, students will complete research-based units with TCU remotely from ECU and supported by ECU staff.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Reflect critically on a complex body of specialist knowledge and understanding of recent developments and methods applicable to the field of Environmental Science and related disciplines.
  2. Apply cognitive, technical and creative skills drawn from a broad discipline base to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex ideas, concepts and theories in Environmental Science.
  3. Apply communication skills to design innovative contributions to professional practice in Environmental Science.
  4. Use high level self management skills to initiate, plan and execute a substantial project in Environmental Science.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 6)

  • Bachelor degree; or
  • Equivalent prior learning including at least five years relevant professional experience.

English Language requirement (Band 4)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0);
  • Bachelor degree from a country specified in the Admissions Policy;
  • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at postgraduate level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience; or
  • Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level

This course has been accredited by ECU as an AQF Level 9 Masters Degree (Coursework) Award.

Secondary Location

For ECU students commencing the joint degree, the first semester of the course is completed at ECU. In the second and third semester of the course, students will complete one semester at ECU and one semester on location at TCU (depending on semester of commencement). In their final semester, students will complete research-based units at TCU, remotely from ECU and supported by ECU staff. Thus, students are required to be on location at TCU for one semester of study. Students also have the option of completing a 2-week internship in Japan during their course.
