Master of Nurse Education

The Master of Nurse Education is designed specifically for clinical nurses aspiring to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence in nurse education. The course builds on the student’s existing knowledge and experience and provides the opportunity to develop teaching, research, writing and leadership skills. Students will review the teaching and learning principles of adult learning, explore appropriate teaching strategies for the clinical setting, create a range of learning resources, examine the leadership styles, reflect on their mentoring abilities and develop critical thinking and analytical skills and knowledge application in order to evaluate practice. The course aims to prepare graduates to deliver best teaching practice to encourage and influence the next generation of nurses.

Students are required to pass the practicum unit of the course.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Reflect critically on a complex body of contemporary nurse education knowledge, research principles and methods to demonstrate mastery of nurse education practice.
  2. Apply cognitive, and creative analytical skills to investigate, evaluate and synthesise complex concepts and theories in authentic practice settings and contexts.
  3. Apply communication and collaboration skills to design innovative contributions to nurse education practice.
  4. Use high level self-management skills to initiate, plan and disseminate a substantial project.

Registration

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 6)

  • Bachelor degree; or
  • Equivalent prior learning including at least five years relevant professional experience.

English Language requirement (Band 5)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • IELTS Academic with a minimum overall score of 7.0 and a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking);
  • Occupational English Test (OET) with a minimum score of B in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking);
  • Pearson English Test (PTE) Academic with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking);
  • TOEFL iBT with a minimum total score of 94 and the following minimum score in each section of the test:
    • 24 for listening
    • 24 for reading,
    • 27 for writing, and
    • 23 for speaking;
  • Bachelor degree from an approved country;
  • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at postgraduate level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent); or
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience.

Note:  English tests must be completed within 2 years of the proposed course commencement date and additional requirements may apply in relation to acceptable number of test sittings.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to provide proof of current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, or with the relevant Nursing/Midwifery Board in their country, and be employed within a healthcare setting in order to undertake the assessment components of the course, and provide a copy of their resume. It is desirable that all applicants have at least two years of clinical experience.
