Master of Engineering

This coursework postgraduate degree is designed for those who have a non-professionally accredited engineering or technology degree and wish to upgrade to a professionally accredited engineering qualification, or who wish to branch out into another area of specialisation. The course focuses on the development of knowledge and skills relevant to professional engineering practice, and along with a sound theoretical base, includes strong elements of practical problem-solving, teamwork and project development. As a result, as well as having multiple technical and transferable skill competencies, graduates will have strong analytical and research skills and the ability to lead complex projects.

Work Experience Requirement

Students are required to complete (or have previously completed) a 12-week practicum under the supervision of an engineer in a relevant industry environment.

Enrolment process

While the Engineering Practicum unit (ENS5111) appears in Year 2 of the course structure, students can complete the practicum requirements at any point after commencing the course. The unit is not available for direct enrolment, instead once the Practicum requirements have been fulfilled, students will need to lodge their Practicum documents through the Application for Credit and Recognition of Prior Learning online application form in order to have the completion of this unit recognised on their academic record. The School’s Practicum coordinator should be contacted for advice on completion of the Practicum.

  2. Apply cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, evaluate and synthesise complex ideas, concepts and theories in authentic engineering situations.

  4. Use high level self-management skills to initiate, plan and execute a substantial engineering project.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 8)

  • Bachelor degree in a cognate discipline; or
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience.

English Language requirement (Band 4)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0);
  • Bachelor degree from a country specified in the Admissions Policy;
  • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at postgraduate level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience; or
  • Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to have completed a Bachelor degree in engineering or engineering technology, with equivalents considered. Alternatively applicants can have completed the Bachelor of Engineering Science, with equivalents considered, successful applicants with an Engineers Australia accredited 4 year AQF level 8 Bachelor of Engineering Honours (or equivalent) may be eligible for a reduced course duration through the award of credit and recognition of prior learning.
