Master of Public Health

Effective from 01-JAN-2018 : Code I62

This coursework degree caters to students who see themselves responding to the frontline of the world's public health problems. In addition, it is designed for those who aspire for careers in various sectors in health and research, including child and adolescent health, healthy aging, health protection and clinical health services, with a focus on program development and management. It provides students with an advanced skill set required for international professional best practice and allows customisation of their study.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Analyse health needs, design public health interventions, and apply appropriate health-related interventions whilst maintaining Indigenous and cross-cultural sensitivity and awareness where appropriate.
  2. Apply collaborative and globally accepted interdisciplinary approaches towards the sustainable protection and improvement of the health of individuals and populations.
  3. Demonstrate ability to plan and execute a substantial health-related research-based project that critically analyses the current body of scientific literature allowing for the synthesis of information into an industry-based publication and presentation that can impact professional practice.
  4. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of theories practices, ethical issues and recent innovations within the public health discipline.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to public health practice.
  6. Employ research-based methods to investigate, analyse and translate scientific evidence and applied theories into public health practice.
  7. Generate and sensitively communicate public health information and strategies to a wide range of local, national and international; Indigenous and non-Indigenous stakeholders applying transliteracy skills.
  8. Integrate theory and discipline knowledge to develop, implement and evaluate innovative, ethical and sustainable evidence-based responses to a diverse range of preventable individual and/or population health problems.

Admission requirements

  • Into a 120 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor Honours degree in the same discipline; or
  • Into a 180 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor degree in the same discipline; or
  • Into a 180 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor Honours degree; or
  • Into a 240 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor degree; or
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years appropriate professional experience.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to have a relevant undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in health which includes some course-work in one or more of the following areas: social science, preventive medicine, community-based public health, community development, health promotion, health communication, or social marketing. It is desirable that all applicants should also provide some evidence of having a history of commitment to the field of public health such as having written material on a public health issue for publication in the media or in a professional publication, being a member of a community or professional group dedicated to public health-related goals, volunteer or paid work in a community organisation that seeks to advance the interests of a disadvantaged population or equivalent.
