Master of Midwifery Practice

This course prepares Registered Nurses to become competent, confident midwives.

Clinical or professional work placement Requirement

Students are required to seek employment as a midwifery student with a maternity service to complete the work placement requirements.

Duty of care

To be eligible to undertake clinical practice and fulfil their duty of care, students are required to complete risk management protocols on commencement of the course and carry out amendments in subsequent semesters, as appropriate. Risk management protocols include, but are not restricted to: Certificate of National Police Clearance Department of Health (WA) Criminal Screening Current Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) initial certification required plus annual renewal of certification, courses available via ECU provider Current Manual Handling Certification initial certification required plus annual renewal of certification, courses available via ECU provider Evidence of immunisation status as per the Department of Health schedule, more info at www.health.wa.gov.au/circularsnew/circular.cfm?Circ_ID=12275 MRSA clearance if worked in, or been admitted to, a health facility outside of Western Australia in the 12 months prior to enrolment Working with Children Check, more information at www.checkwwc.wa.gov.au Due to the practical nature of the nursing and midwifery professions, there are inherent performance requirements applicable to this course that may impact upon the success of some potential students. Applicants and students with a disability or other issue likely to impact on their ability to perform in practice are encouraged to contact the Course Coordinator to discuss the support and inherent requirements of this course.

Attendance requirements

Concurrent employment may include rostered shifts over 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Professional practice rules

Students will be expected to comply with the conduct requirements of their workplace.

Registration

Students will need to graduate to be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia is required to practice in the profession.

Enables graduates to apply for registration as a midwife.

Admission requirements

  • Into a 120 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor Honours degree in the same discipline; or
  • Into a 180 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor degree in the same discipline; or
  • Into a 180 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor Honours degree; or
  • Into a 240 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor degree; or
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years appropriate professional experience.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to provide proof of current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (Registered Nurse Division 1), and must have at least 1 year post graduate nursing experience, and provide proof of employment as a midwifery student in a maternity hospital, and provide a statement detailing their interest in the midwifery course and the skills they have achieved in nursing to assist midwifery practice, and provide a copy of their resume.

Course Duration

  • 2 years: 1 year part-time followed by 1 year full-time.

Course Delivery

  • Joondalup: Full Time

Non standard timetable requirements

Students should note this course takes two years minimum to complete as the first year is taken part-time and second year full-time. Students complete the first year of the course part-time to enable them to commence their 'continuity of care' clinical experiences, where they meet regularly with women during their pregnancy and perinatal period. The second year of the course is full-time.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply and model communication and collaboration skills in midwifery practice, demonstrating cross-cultural awareness and an enhanced ability to empathise and work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  2. Apply cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, evaluate and synthesise complex ideas, concepts and theories in authentic midwifery practice situations.
  3. Reflect critically on a complex body of midwifery knowledge and relevant research to demonstrate mastery of midwifery practice.
  4. Use high level self-management skills to initiate, plan and execute a substantial midwifery practice project.
