Master of Education

This course provides an opportunity for candidates to undertake independent research comprising foundational coursework and a substantive thesis. Candidates will specifically learn about and undertake educational research that is high quality and robust. The course prepares students to inquire into the nature of educational problems and generate new knowledge which can be used to enhance policy and practice. When undertaking research, students are encouraged to become involved in applied research which attempts to provide solutions to the problems faced by learners, teachers, administrators, consultants and policy-makers.

Course Learning Outcomes

1. Critically analyse peer-reviewed research to independently engage with and review rigorous educational literature.
2. Critically engage with significant and contemporary educational research theories and provide analyses of theoretical perspectives to educational research.
3. Provide examples for why research integrity and ethical conduct matters.
4. Understand the necessity of linking and nesting multiple research design components to ensure research is robust conceptually and theoretically, is practically feasible, and contributes to the field.
5. Design, plan and complete an independent research project.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 8)

• Bachelor degree in a cognate discipline; or
• Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience.

English Language requirement (Band 4)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

• IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0);
• Bachelor degree from a country specified in the Admissions Policy;
• Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at postgraduate level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
• Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience; or
• Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to have a Bachelor of Education. Alternatively applicants can have a Bachelor degree in any other field, plus extensive professional experience, or have three years of teacher training, plus extensive professional experience.
