Master of Science (Assisted Reproductive Technology)

This course is designed for medical, biomedical and biological science graduates with Honours, a Graduate Certificate or a Graduate Diploma, and who wish to work in the field of assisted reproduction. Students will gain theoretical knowledge ranging from ovarian and testicular biology to assay quality control and the quality management of a clinical laboratory, together with practical experience on the culture and assessment of gametes and embryos. Emphasis is on learning diagnostic andrology techniques (basic semen analysis, antisperm antibody detection, sperm DNA fragmentation assessment) to a level required by clinical laboratories; the demonstration of competency within an internal quality control programme and a formal external quality assurance programme; and semen cryopreservation and sperm preparation techniques to a standard suitable for clinical use. Aseptic culture techniques and the development of skills to dissect, handle and culture animal oocytes will also be examined.

Admission requirements

  • Into a 120 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor Honours degree in the same discipline; or
  • Into a 180 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor degree in the same discipline; or
  • Into a 180 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor Honours degree; or
  • Into a 240 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor degree; or
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years appropriate professional experience.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to have a Bachelor's degree in medical science, biomedical science or biological science (with Honours - second class or above), or a Graduate Diploma of Reproductive Science or similar, with an average of 65% or above, or a medical or veterinary degree with 12 months experience in reproductive science, with equivalents considered.
