Master of Engineering Science

This program provides engineers with research training and the ability to apply advanced bodies of knowledge in one or more disciplines or areas of practice. Research is undertaken in engineering disciplines, including chemical, civil, electrical, renewable energy, environmental, mechanical, mechatronic or petroleum engineering. An understanding of recent developments within a discipline coupled with an advanced knowledge of research methods is expected.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Reflect critically on a body of engineering knowledge and recent developments, research principles and methods to demonstrate mastery in a field within the engineering discipline.
  2. Apply cognitive and technical skills to investigate, analyse and synthesise information and complex engineering problems by using rigorous research principles, established theories and appropriate methods.
  3. Apply communication and collaboration skills to critically analyse and disseminate research findings that make a contribution to knowledge in engineering.
  4. Use high-level self-management skills to plan and execute a substantial piece of research that contributes to theory and/or practice in engineering, while embodying principles of innovation and sustainability.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 8)

  • Bachelor degree in a cognate discipline; or
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience.

English Language requirement (Band 4)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0);
  • Bachelor degree from a country specified in the Admissions Policy;
  • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at postgraduate level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience; or
  • Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to have a four year Bachelor degree in engineering with a minimum course average of 65%, with equivalents considered.

This course has been accredited by ECU as an AQF Level 9 Masters Degree (Research) Award.
