Master of Technology (Petroleum Engineering)

Petroleum Engineers work in a range of industry sectors, often related to oil and gas exploration, drilling and well completion, reservoir study, and hydrocarbon production from underground reservoirs. This course provides a pathway for engineering graduates from other discipline areas to extend their knowledge and build the foundations for a professional engineering career in the oil and gas industry. Students who have completed ECU’s Graduate Diploma in Petroleum Engineering can enter this course with one year of advanced standing and will be able to complete with one additional semester of full-time study

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Reflect critically on a complex body of petroleum engineering knowledge, research principles and methods to demonstrate mastery of scholarship.
  2. Apply cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, evaluate and synthesise complex ideas, concepts and theories in authentic situations.
  3. Apply communication and collaboration skills to design innovative contributions to professional practice.
  4. Use high-level self-management skills to initiate, plan and execute a substantial project.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 8)

  • Bachelor degree in a cognate discipline; or
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience.

English Language requirement (Band 4)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0);
  • Bachelor degree from a country specified in the Admissions Policy;
  • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at postgraduate level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience; or
  • Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to have completed a Bachelor of Engineering, or a Bachelor of Technology, or a Bachelor of Science in geoscience, geology, physics/applied physics, chemistry/applied chemistry, or mathematics/applied mathematics, with equivalents considered.

Students who are unable to complete the degree may be able to exit with a Graduate Diploma in Petroleum Engineering with Course Coordinator approval.
