Master of Communication

The Master of Communications is a coursework program that provides graduates in the discipline of communications with the opportunity to acquire advanced knowledge and understanding of theory and practice in contemporary communications. Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding and research ability through the design and execution of a Masters project. This will be a guided independent study leading to the development of a significant product in the area of the student’s interest and expertise based on a process of inquiry, analysis and synthesis.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate mastery of the theories, research methodologies and technical skills in the communications profession.
  2. Identify, interpret, critically evaluate, and apply the theories, approaches, emerging trends, and technologies of the communications professions.
  3. Apply innovation and initiative through the creation and/or co-creation of informed contributions of value for communities, networks and/or organisations, responding to complex challenges.
  4. Demonstrate a high level of interdependence and individual accountability through researching, initiating, planning, executing and defending a substantial project.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 8)

  • Bachelor degree in a cognate discipline; or
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience.

English Language requirement (Band 4)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0);
  • Bachelor degree from a country specified in the Admissions Policy;
  • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at postgraduate level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience; or
  • Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

It is desirable that all applicants have five years appropriate professional experience.

Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level

This course has been accredited by ECU as an AQF Level 9 Masters Degree (Coursework) Award.
