Master of Nursing

The Master of Nursing provides Registered Nurses with an opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge of contemporary health care practice and the skills to apply this knowledge to practice and policy within a national and international context across care settings from primary health care to tertiary care. Students will undertake core units of study related to clinical leadership and management, global health issues, chronic condition management, clinical education, health practice evaluation, and evidenced based practice and research design. Students also complete two specialist core units providing an opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in these important areas of practice: care of the ageing and mental health.

Course Learning Outcomes

1. Reflect critically on a complex body of contemporary health care system knowledge, research principles and methods to demonstrate mastery of nursing practice.
2. Apply cognitive and creative analytical skills to investigate, evaluate and synthesise complex concepts and theories in authentic practice settings and contexts.
3. Apply communication and collaboration skills to design innovative contributions to professional practice.
4. Use high level self-management skills to initiate, plan and develop a project.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 8)

• Bachelor degree in a cognate discipline; or
• Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience.

English Language requirement (Band 4)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

• IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0);
• Bachelor degree from a country specified in the Admissions Policy;
• Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at postgraduate level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
• Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience; or
• Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to have a Bachelor degree in nursing. Applicants with equivalent prior learning must have two years full-time (or equivalent) post registration professional practice, and submit a current curriculum vitae.

International students are required to provide an English language test approved by ECU with a score equivalent to an Academic IELTS overall minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0). Internationally schooled applicants may also be required to meet this requirement.

Minimum English standard requirements for this course may also be satisfied with one of the following:

• Successfully completed study at Bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider.
• Bachelor degree from approved country: Bahamas, Barbados, Botswana, Canada, Dominica, Germany, Ghana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, NZ, Nigeria, Singapore, Sth Africa, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, UK, USA, West Indies, Zambia, Zimbabwe
