Bachelor of Aviation

This course provides a focussed professional education and graduate status for those seeking to enter the aviation industry in flying or non-flying roles. The course covers a good breadth of the underlying science and technology related to aircraft systems in addition to a range of more general content areas related to the aviation industry.

Practicum Option

Students in this course have the opportunity to seek a Work Integrated Learning placement with an industry partner equivalent to one unit of full time study.

Attendance requirements

Students will be required to complete 120 hours of part-time practicum placement across the semester

Prerequisites

Students must have successfully completed at least two thirds of the requirements towards their degree and either: have a Weighted average mark (WAM) of 65% or higher across their course, or have a WAM of 70% or higher for the two semesters preceding their application.

Application process

Students should initially consult with their Course Coordinator at the commencement of their second year regarding Work Integrated Learning processes, timelines and requirements. Students who meet the criteria and who wish to participate in Work Integrated Learning must apply in writing to their Course Coordinator no later than the end of their second year of study. Selection will be based on academic performance, the application and a formal interview process (the interview process typically involves an ECU staff member to begin with and the industry host before the placement is finalised).

Enrolment process

Students will be enrolled in the unit SCA3460 Aviation Work Experience (normally completed in third year)

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of the concepts, best-practice principles and professional developments in a number of areas relating to aerodynamics and aviation.
  2. Review, analyse and synthesise knowledge in order to exercise judgment to interpret and calculate aircraft performance data
  3. Demonstrate creativity and innovation in the integration of knowledge of sustainability issues and principles relevant to aviation into professional practice.
  4. Apply broad mathematical knowledge and skills in a variety of aviation contexts.
  5. Generate, evaluate and communicate ideas in a range of aviation contexts using digital technologies to access, evaluate and synthesise relevant knowledge from multiple sources.
  6. Demonstrate cross cultural competence and a strong appreciation for diversity in professional practice in aviation
  7. Work collaboratively with others in an aviation context, upholding ethical standards within the industry.
  8. Demonstrate initiative, planning and decision making through reflective practice and identify opportunities for continued professional development in the aviation profession.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 3)

All applicants must meet the academic admission requirements for this course. The indicative or guaranteed ATAR is as published (where applicable) or academic admission requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • AQF Cert IV;
  • Successfully completed 0.25 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Undergraduate Certificate;
  • Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test;
  • University Preparation Course;
  • Indigenous University Orientation Course; or
  • Experience Based Entry Scheme.

English Language requirement (Band 3)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • Year 12 English ATAR/English Literature ATAR grade C or better or equivalent;
  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test;
  • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0);
  • Successfully completed 1.0 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher in the UK, Ireland, USA, NZ or Canada;
  • University Preparation Course;
  • Indigenous University Orientation Course;
  • AQF Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree;
  • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent); or
  • Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level

This course has been accredited by ECU as an AQF Level 7 Bachelor Degree Award.
