Master of Finance and Banking

This coursework Masters is designed for students seeking a comprehensive postgraduate degree in applied finance and financial management. The course prepares students to work in the dynamic financial services industry. The course focuses on how individuals, financial institutions, businesses and governments make borrowing, lending and investment decisions. Students will learn how to identify, analyse and interpret financial information and use industry-relevant databases and software. The financial services industry demands graduates who can think critically and have an analytical approach to problem solving; attributes that students will develop through this course.

Practicum Option

Students will develop a broad range of work related skills in a public, private or not-for-profit organisation at a management level

Duty of care

Students must participate in an induction on the requirements and procedures for completing work placement including documentation and risk management.

Attendance requirements

Students must complete a minimum of 100 hours in an approved work environment. Host organisations may require students to attend work after hours and on the weekends

Application process

Students are required to submit a resume, a statement addressing their suitability and may be required to attend an interview.

Professional practice rules

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Analyse, evaluate, develop and implement the theories, approaches and strategies contributing to effective financial management.
  2. Apply innovation and creativity to propose sustainable solutions to business problems in diverse environments.
  3. Collaborate in team settings to plan and produce a business concept adopting a high level of personal autonomy and accountability.
  4. Demonstrate and reflect on cross-cultural awareness, including Indigenous cultural competence, and its relevance to finance and banking.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the recent global developments in finance and banking.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of research principles and methods required to assess and manage risk.
  7. Demonstrate mastery of the theoretical and technical knowledge required to support informed financing and investment decisions.
  8. Generate and evaluate complex ideas and concepts to create wealth and value for a business and manage operational and investment risk.
  9. Investigate various approaches and theories to analyse problems and make recommendations under uncertain conditions in global economies and financial markets.
  10. Plan and execute a substantial research based project to assess risk and make recommendations in banking and finance.
  11. Research and communicate economic and financial information, strategies and plans to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Admission requirements

  • Into a 120 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor Honours degree in the same discipline; or
  • Into a 180 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor degree in the same discipline; or
  • Into a 180 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor Honours degree; or
  • Into a 240 credit point Masters Degree, a Bachelor degree; or
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years appropriate professional experience.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to have an undergraduate degree in a discipline other than finance. Alternatively applicants can apply with an undergraduate degree in a finance discipline and their applications will be assessed for suitability by the Course Coordinator.
