Graduate Certificate in News and Entertainment Media

News is a vital component of a strong democracy and a powerful tool for social change. However, in a competitive media jobs market, graduates should be adaptable and ready for multiple roles and opportunities within the industry. Building on news storytelling skills, this course will also equip students to work in entertainment media. Whether creating stories to inform or entertain, the Graduate Certificate in News and Entertainment Media aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to make meaningful and positive contributions to society through traditional and new communication channels (radio, tv, streaming). Students of the Graduate Certificate in News and Entertainment Media will gain practical experience in producing and presenting radio and tv content for varying audiences, with a particular focus on delivering content addressing issues of social justice. This programme is dynamic, practical and engaging and delivered by media industry professionals.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Communicate specialised knowledge, concepts and skills to a variety of audiences using the techniques of news and entertainment media storytelling and production.
  2. Apply independent judgment when analysing and evaluating complex ideas to create news and entertainment media.
  3. Demonstrate self-management by initiating, planning, implementing and evaluating news and entertainment media.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 6)

  • Bachelor degree; or
  • Equivalent prior learning including at least five years relevant professional experience.

English Language requirement (Band 4)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0);
  • Bachelor degree from a country specified in the Admissions Policy;
  • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at postgraduate level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience; or
  • Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level

This course has been accredited by ECU as an AQF Level 8 Graduate Certificate Award.
