Bachelor of Global Media and Communication

This International Dual Degree provides students with an opportunity to gain valuable international experience while receiving two degrees. Graduates will receive both a Bachelor of Global Media and Communication from ECU, and a BA (Hons) Global Communications and Media from the University of Portsmouth (UK). This course draws on the cross disciplinary knowledge and skills across existing ECU and University of Portsmouth units to facilitate the pursuit of a career across the employment domains of media and communications and takes advantage of the specialisations each university offers. The course provides an opportunity to prepare graduates to work in the media industries nationally and internationally. This course focuses on providing a critical understanding of global media, practical industry skills, cultural contexts and professional communication. It fosters a creative and critical global mindset. The choice of units will help students to navigate complexity and diversity in a rapidly changing work environment. Students will be able to specialise in either Media and Journalism or Screen, Media and Cultural Studies to gain relevant industry skills and a comprehensive transdisciplinary understanding of media production, consumption and representation. Clinical or professional work placement Option

In the core unit SAH3200 Industry and Community (which is mandatory for all those who enrol in the Global Media and Communication degree) students will produce work in the form of presentation, performance, exhibition, strategic report or research project that will be driven and assessed by a community and/or industry representative. Projects can also be carried out in teams and be based on an industry/community problem. The unit requires students to engage in authentic project management process as they develop their project, analysing needs and appropriate methods, developing design and implementation plans and critically evaluating results, establishing clear metrics and responding to criteria.

Application process

Students should initially consult with their Course Coordinator at the commencement of their fourth year regarding Work Integrated Learning processes, timelines and requirements.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply Media, Communication and Cultural Studies knowledge to a range of theoretical and technical/practical local, international and global media situations.
  2. Think critically to analyse, interpret and conceptualise/synthesise complex Media & Communication knowledge/problems with an understanding of cultural, social and political influences.
  3. Think creatively to anticipate challenges and generate Media and Communication solutions/responses.
  4. Use digital technologies and Media and Communication related literacy to access, evaluate and synthesise relevant information from multiple sources.
  5. Communicate local, international and global Media and Communication knowledge and ideas clearly, coherently and with independence.
  6. Demonstrate a global outlook with respect for cultural diversity, including Indigenous cultural competence.
  7. Work collaboratively and demonstrate initiative to implement social, sustainable, and ethical values through appropriate disciplinary methods.
  8. Demonstrate autonomy, accountability and judgement for own learning and scholarship and/or professional practice.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 3)

All applicants must meet the academic admission requirements for this course. The indicative or guaranteed ATAR is as published (where applicable) or academic admission requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • AQF Cert IV;
  • Successfully completed 0.25 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Undergraduate Certificate;
  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test;
  • University Preparation Course;
  • Indigenous University Orientation Course;
  • Aboriginal University Readiness Assessment; or
  • Experience Based Entry Scheme.

English Language requirement (Band 3)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • Year 12 English ATAR/English Literature ATAR grade C or better or equivalent;
  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test;
  • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0);
  • Successfully completed 1.0 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher in the UK, Ireland, USA, NZ or Canada;
  • University Preparation Course;
  • Indigenous University Orientation Course;
  • Aboriginal University Readiness Assessment;
  • AQF Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree;
  • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent); or
  • Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Portfolio pathway applications are not accepted for this course.

Course Duration

  • Full Time: 3.5 Years
  • Part Time: 6 Years

Course Delivery

  • Mount Lawley: Full Time, Part Time

Secondary Location

The first two years of the course and final semester (fourth year) are delivered at ECU's Mount Lawley campus. The third year (full-time) is delivered at the University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth, United Kingdom. Students will need to relocate to Portsmouth for this portion of the course.

Course Structure

Students will undertake the first two years of study at Edith Cowan University, Year 3 at the University of Portsmouth and the final semester in Year 4 at Edith Cowan University. The course will total 420 credit points, comprised of: - 12 x 15cp core units (180 credit points); and - 1 major made up: 8 x 15cp ECU units (120 credit points) 6 x 20cp University of Portsmouth units (120 credit points)
