Master of Communication

The communication landscape is changing daily, with digital disruption the only constant. Studying the Master of Communication, you will be equipped with the professional and theoretical knowledge to meet this disruption head on, with confidence. While companies grapple with protecting their reputation and behaving ethically under intense scrutiny from many stakeholders, communication professionals need to provide counsel at the highest level. The course has a laser focus on current and future industry concerns, and is taught by leaders in industry and research, with an emphasis on engagement and ethical and inclusive communication. You will develop, through a fully online offering, the critical thinking, analytical and practical skills needed to meet the environmental, social, technological and governance challenges communicators and organisations face daily.We will go beyond the acronyms and buzzwords in current communication practice, and equip practitioners, through real-world practice, to be excellent communication professionals in their chosen industry.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Critically analyse a complex body of strategic and digital communication knowledge, including ethics, social inclusion, and research methods, to apply them to communication practice in the field.
  2. Apply cognitive, technical and creative skills to research, evaluate and synthesise solutions to complex communication issues.
  3. Apply communication and collaboration skills to generate communication strategies, tactics and materials that meet societal, environmental and organisational expectations.
  4. Use high level self-management skills to plan and execute substantial projects that meet time and quality requirements.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 6)

  • Bachelor degree; or
  • Equivalent prior learning including at least five years relevant professional experience.

English Language requirement (Band 4)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0);
  • Bachelor degree from a country specified in the Admissions Policy;
  • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at postgraduate level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience; or
  • Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to meet the published entry requirements. Alternatively, applicants may apply with a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in a related field including Communication, Media and Communication, or Creative Media. Successful applicants with a Bachelor degree, or higher, with significant coursework in a related field, or the combination of relevant coursework and two years relevant professional experience, may seek reduced course duration by applying for recognition of prior learning (up to 60 credit points). Degrees with significant coursework (ie. a major) include: Arts, Business or Commerce degree with a major in Public Relations, Social Media, Strategic Communication or Marketing. Relevant degrees with two years relevant professional experience include: Arts with any major (other than those above) and at least two years of relevant experience in a Communications role.
