Graduate Diploma of Broadcasting

This course prepares university graduates for a career in broadcasting, particularly radio, television and online. This practical course is taught by professional journalists and broadcasters, and has the backing of the media industry around Australia. Course content includes journalism, presentation, technical and people skills, which are required for today's media professionals.

Work Experience Requirement

Students will use industry-standard equipment in simulated newsroom environments to produce broadcast-quality news materials meeting all industry, legal and publishing requirements.

Attendance requirements

Students must undertake minimum of 200 hours of simulated workplace experience.

Implications of failing

Students who fail the simulated work experience assessment in BRO 5111 or BRO 5112 cannot progress into the second semester of the course and will be counselled by the Course Coordinator as to options. Students who fail the simulated work experience assessment in BRO 5211 or BRO 5213 cannot gradutate from the degree and will be counselled by the Course Coordinator as to options.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply general and discipline specific skills to create appropriate and relevant content for journalism and broadcasting.
  2. Communicate advanced knowledge and skills to a variety of audiences using the techniques of journalism and broadcasting.
  3. Apply high level, independent judgement and the critical thinking when engaging with complex issues, situations and ideas to produce creative solutions.
  4. Demonstrate project and collaboration skills by initiating, planning, implementing and evaluating projects in journalism and broadcasting.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 6)

  • Bachelor degree; or
  • Equivalent prior learning including at least five years relevant professional experience.

English Language requirement (Band 4)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0);
  • Bachelor degree from a country specified in the Admissions Policy;
  • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at postgraduate level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience; or
  • Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to attend an audition, and attend an interview. Accommodations can be made for students located outside WA. Additionally applicants must submit a personal statement of no more than 500 words, resume and photograph with their application. Students are strongly advised to attend a personalised information session about the course with the coordinator.
