Bachelor of Technology (Aeronautical)

This course is intended for students who have an interest in aviation, aeronautics and flying, and who wish to have the option of expanding their studies into a pathway towards becoming an accredited professional in an engineering field. Provided appropriate electives are chosen, graduating students can apply to articulate into ECU's Master of Engineering course (specialising in either Mechanical or Civil Engineering) enabling students to achieve professional engineer status after a further two years of study. Aeronautical technology deals with the science and technology of aviation, including aircraft systems, materials and manufacturing technology, and aircraft operation. Areas of study within the course include a foundation in science and mathematics, along with engineering mechanics, computer-aided design, engineering materials, and thermodynamics and fluids, in addition to specific aviation science subjects, which cover aircraft systems and structures, aircraft propulsion and aerodynamics. Students will also gain an understanding of the operation and performance of aircraft from the point-of-view of an aviation technologist. The course focuses on the development of knowledge and skills relevant to the aviation industry, and along with a sound theoretical base, includes strong elements of practical problem-solving, team work and project work. As a result, as well as having multiple technical and transferable skill competencies, students will graduate with strong analytical skills and the ability to contribute to complex projects.

Practicum Requirement

During the course, students will be required to undertake a minimum of 8 weeks practical work experience located in an engineering technology industry environment. This will normally be undertaken during a vacation period.

  6. Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of common manufacturing processes and materials used for different engineering applications
  7. Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of computer aided design (CAD) and its application in aeronautical and engineering contexts
  8. Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of electronic instrumentation and electrical systems, including problem identification and solution
  9. Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of the theory, technical and practical applications relevant to aeronautical technology
  10. Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, engineering dynamics and the mechanics of solids
  11. Demonstrate initiative and planning in the application of appropriate principles, tools and technologies to generate solutions to aeronautical problems
  12. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own learning in the application of research to design and test a device, component or system in aeronautical technology
  13. Demonstrate the requisite levels of technology, information and numeric literacy as well as technical skills to perform effectively in the aeronautical profession
  14. Identify sustainability issues and principles that are applicable to aeronautical technology and the wider community and integrate them into aeronautical practice
  15. Incorporate an awareness of cross-cultural and indigenous issues in the conduct of professional practice in aeronautical technology
  16. Understand and interpret international developments and global best practices in aeronautical technology
  17. Utilise technical skills to review, analyse, consolidate and apply knowledge to generate solutions to aeronautical technology problems

Course Specific Admission Requirements

It is desirable that all applicants have passed Mathematics: Methods ATAR, with equivalents considered, and Physics ATAR or Engineering Studies ATAR, with equivalents considered. Alternatively applicants can complete bridging units during the first year of their studies, if required, if students have not passed one or more of these subjects.

Note: Students who have not passed Mathematics: Methods ATAR (or equivalent) must complete the bridging unit MAT1108 Foundations of Mathematics before they can enrol in MAT1137 Introductory Applied Mathematics. Students who have passed Year 11 Mathematics: Methods ATAR (or equivalent) can consider discussing a pre-requisite waiver with the Mathematics coordinator to enable them to enrol into MAT1137 Introductory Applied Mathematics. Note: Students who have passed Mathematics: Methods ATAR or Mathematics: Specialist ATAR (or equivalents) should enrol in MAT1236 Calculus 1 in Year 1 Semester 1 in place of MAT1137 Introductory Applied Mathematics, and enrol in an additional elective in Year 1 Semester 2 in place of MAT1236 Calculus 1.
