Bachelor of Design

Creative industries form an increasingly important component of the global economy and design provides a basis for using creativity to address social, environmental, economic and communication problems. The course focuses on the creation and exploitation of intellectual property through a range of disciplines such as Graphic Design, Games and Interactive Design, Environmental and Spatial Design and Animation. Students will research and develop original products that impact on audiences and address practical outcomes for users. The course enables students to develop the technical and general skills that make them ready for employment and enable them to develop along with the design industry itself. Graduates will have an informed, critical and creative approach to understanding media, design and visual culture within a rapidly evolving social and work environment.

Internship Option

Work Integrated Learning is available to students in the following forms: - All students are required to complete industry projects through the unit DES3208 - All students engage with industry and have site visits through the unit CCA3111 Preparation for Professional Life - Students are able to complete the unit CCA3104 Professional Placement and have it count towards their major - Students are able to undertake individual industry projects through the unit CCA3108 Independent Study and have it count towards their major.

Application process

Students undertaking either a Professional Placement or Independent Study must consult with the unit coordinator to ensure the eligibility of there project or placement in terms of the respective unit outcomes and volume of learning.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply creative thinking and innovation to generate and evaluate complex ideas and provide sustainable solutions to contemporary challenges.
  2. Demonstrate International and cross-cultural awareness, including Indigenous cultural competence as they relate to visual representation and accessible design.
  3. Demonstrate a professional level of written and oral communication skills to synthesise existing research and articulate new creative concepts.
  4. Demonstrate deep theoretical and technical knowledge of Design principles and history and their application to contemporary design practice.
  5. Demonstrate initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving, and decision making processes to manage the workflow of projects in a professional and ethical manner.
  6. Obtain, analyse and interpret information using trans literacy skills, including technology, information literacy and numeracy proficiency.
  7. Reflect on and evaluate own understandings of the range of theories, techniques, and strategies relevant to area(s) of specialisation to adapt to the evolving multidisciplinary needs of the design industry.
  8. Work independently and collaboratively to produce tangible design outcomes for real world clients and evaluate the effectiveness of products and team processes.

Students are also required to complete 180 Credit Points in the form of a 12 unit major from within the Bachelor of Design.
