Description

This unit builds on ABB1129 to develop enhanced Information Communication and Technology (ICT) skills for students entering tertiary education. Students will learn Internet search skills and develop their abilitiesto use Internet sources critically. The unit develops student confidencewith Edith Cowan University's online library resources as well as the broader resources of the www. Students will also learn file management, word processing and spreadsheet skills using Microsoft software.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Print-based to be phased out by end of 2007

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Conduct a systematic Internet search on an academic topic and retrieve and critically evaluate information.
  2. Demonstrate competency in use of Endnote bibliographical software.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word.

Unit Content

  1. Essay writing using a broad range of MS Word and Endnote software effectively. University conventions will be used.
  2. Exploration of a broad range of MS Excel uses.
  3. Selection and evaluation of information from a variety of www sources. These include: general www resources from public websites and online databases available through Edith Cowan University's Library web page.
  4. Use of PowerPoint presentation software.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures, Discussion groups, Presentations, Independent learning activities.
