Description
Students will apply an advanced theoretical knowledge of dementia specific care, therapy, and support interventions, comparing this with observed clinical practice throughout the dementia trajectory. This comparison will allow them to consider the extent to which theory is developed into evidence-based clinical practice.
Non Standard Timetable Requirements
This unit will run each semester. Students need to have access to a computer and modem capable of accessing online resources.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
- Critically analyse the theory underpinning the use of psychosocial interventions in dementia care and the observed usefulness of these interventions in a range of settings.
- Critically analyse the theory underpinning the use of spiritual care and support in dementia care and the observed usefulness of this care and support in a range of settings.
- Describe the pharmacological agents employed in the care of people with dementia across a range of settings, critically analysing the theory underpinning their use and observed usefulness.
- Describe the physical care and therapy employed for people with dementia across a range of settings, critically analysing the theory underpinning the use of this care and therapy and its observed usefulness.
- Describe the use of culturally appropriate care for people with dementia across a range of settings, critically analysing the theory underpinning this care its observed usefulness.

- Culturally appropriate careand support for people with dementia and their family carers.
- Physical care and therapy for people with dementia.
- Psychosocial support for people with dementia and their family carers.
- Spiritual care and support for people with dementia and their family carers.
- The use of pharmacological agents for the person with dementia.
Additional Learning Experience Information
Students will be provided with on-line resources, including course information and documents, external links, and discussion boards. For all students, activities to promote learning will include visits to clinical settings where care, therapy, and support for people with dementia and/or their family carers will be observed and discussions with staff will be undertaken.
