Description

This unit examines the importance of entrepreneurial activity in the commercial arts and the emergence of social entrepreneurship to build creative capital in the community. It also details the project planning and management activities undertaken by an Executive Producer in creating and producing arts projects. Students develop their own entrepreneurial capabilities by working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations respectfully and progressively. The employability skills that students learn in this unit can be applied to promote diversity and inclusion, collaboration and internationalisation in myriad industry contexts.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Use critical and project management skills required of an Executive Producer to generate and plan entrepreneurial proposals that take account of Australian and international market conditions.
  2. Recognise and resolve issues associated with starting new commercial arts ventures, including challenges in researching and analysing business opportunities.
  3. Collaborate effectively with others, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, to produce a culturally responsive venture concept plan that deploys entrepreneurial planning processes.
  4. Generate accurate, comprehensive and viable project management proposals.
  5. Deliver a pitch to a professional standard.

  1. The theory and practice of cultural entrepreneurship.
  2. Cross-cultural engagement protocols and practices.
  3. Research skills for entrepreneurial ventures.
  4. Commercialisation within the culture and arts sector.
  5. Idea generation and the new project/event development process.
  6. Attracting resources to take advantage of an opportunity.
  7. Legal, ethical, and cultural issues facing entrepreneurs.
  8. Pitching and communication for entrepreneurs.
  9. The roles of an Executive Producer in the arts and creative industries.
  10. Executive producing in international arts contexts.
  11. Tools and techniques for planning, scheduling and controlling a project.
  12. Project team and resources management.
  13. Post project reviews and evaluation.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students will attend a series of classes and engage in learning activities through the ECU Learning Management System. Students will also undertake work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to devise a project.

Informal vivas may be conducted as part of an assessment task, where staff require further information to confirm the learning outcomes have been met. Academic Integrity

Integrity is a core value at Edith Cowan University, and it is expected that ECU students complete their assessment tasks honestly and with acknowledgement of other people's work as well as any generative artificial intelligence tools that may have been used. This means that assessment tasks must be completed individually (unless it is an authorised group assessment task) and any sources used must be referenced.

Breaches of academic integrity can include:

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
