Description

This unit explores the critical contemporary issues affecting the study and practice of arts management. It examines the recent literature in the field as well as the latest developments in professional practice, with particular focus on issues relating to management, marketing, finance and law.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. A sound knowledge of the most recent research into arts management world-wide, coupled with an understanding of key findings and methodologies.
  2. An in-depth understanding of the various factors affecting arts management in the contemporary environment.
  3. The ability to critically analyse and synthesise information acquired throughout the unit, so as to readily apply this information in a practical sense or to undertake further research in the field.

Unit Content

  1. An analysis of the contemporary financial environment as it relates to arts organisations, incorporating discussions relating to Government funding, corporate sponsorship and self-generated income.
  2. An examination of key issues affecting the management of arts organisations, as and when they arise.
  3. An examination of new concepts, trends and techniques associated with the marketing of Australian artistic product, incorporating analysis of modern reaserch methodologies and audience development strategies.
  4. An exploration of major issues affecting the current political, economic, socio-cultural, technological and global environments, together with the range of opportunities and challenges these issues present to modern arts managers.

Additional Learning Experience Information

A series of seminars incorporating lectures, class discussions, literature reviews and case analyses.
