Description
This unit investigates the changing complexity of teaching and learning experiences as students move from primary to middle school visual arts education. The importance of integrated projects, visual literacy foundations and valid assessment practices informs the content of this unit.

Students must pass 1 units from AED2203

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
- Demonstrate proficiency in planning lessons and devising integrated learning experiences in art making and art interpretation.
- Design, present and evaluate a peer teaching art history/criticism lesson (microteaching).
- Explain assessment regimes for criterion and norm-referenced programs within the visual arts at middle years levels.
- Explain the content and intention of the DET Outcomes and Standards Framework (2004)(OSF), and relate this to the emerging Australian Curriculum.
- Identify significant sociological and cultural issues underpinning middle years visual arts education.
- Make clearly expressed contributions to any discussion about visual literacy (including encoding and decoding of visual text).
- Plan and write simple assessment criteria and related rubrics for lower secondary art projects.

- Art critical and art historical study of images and artefacts.
- Assessment principles and practices.
- Planning and teaching strategies for integrated middle years visual arts programs.
- Practical analysis of visual arts activities and resources.
- Western Australian and National Curriculum materials for the Arts (early adolescence).
Additional Learning Experience Information
This unit consists of formal lectures, practical workshops and student research. The unit is underpinned by a Reader, prescribed text, collaborative learning experiences, individual student support and on-line resources through Blackboard.
