Description

This unit explores the advanced study of integrated arts and contemporary curriculum design to enhance and extend the holistic learning of young children. An emphasis will be placed on drama, dance and media arts from birth to eight. Students will inquire into the complexities of embodied expression through drama and dance, and will analyse and evaluate the suitability of available contemporary media within a range of arts based contexts for learning in the early years. Students will critique the contexts teachers generate for children to express, create and use semiotics to understand their world, and apply evidence-based theory to their own construction of a philosophical stance in relation to teaching of the Arts.

Prerequisite Rule

Students enrolled in I81 must complete ECE6130

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. Design effective experiences for building creativity and imagination through integration of the five arts strands.
2. Critically analyse the use of Media Arts for young audiences.
3. Design effective environments for the Arts and teach performance in drama and dance, as well as how to take the role of the audience.
4. Critically review current literature on the changing nature of play, and how it is experienced by young children through the Arts.
5. Demonstrate an ability to use the arts as a vehicle for building cultural belonging and cultural competence.
6. Analyse childrens use of semiotics to construct, convey and express meaning.
7. Devise creative and innovative uses of a range of technologies.
8. Extend inquiry methods with which to investigate, research and extend personal dance, drama and media arts skills, techniques and processes.

Unit Content

1. Contemporary pedagogical approaches to drama, dance and creative movement for children aged birth to eight.
2. The place of media arts in early childhood.
3. Contexts for socio-emotional learning, verbal and non-verbal expression through dramatic arts experiences.
4. Cultural belonging through authentic arts experiences.
5. Play-based experiences in drama, dance and media arts.
6. Creative and innovative technologies that support and extend learning experiences in the arts.
7. The use of semiotics by young children to express meaning and understanding of their world through dance, drama and media arts.
8. Planning, assessing and reflection using the Early Years Learning Framework, Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines, the National Quality Standard and the WA Curriculum.

Additional Learning Experience Information

A combination of lectures, workshops, guest speakers, videos, practicum, required readings and group and individually assigned work are used to achieve the unit outcomes. Students are required to become independent learners, contributors in workshops and competent team members.
