Description

Primary teachers require a sound pedagogical understanding of the role of the visual arts in the creative development of primary children. In this unit, students will work from a practical visual arts focus to develop confidence, understanding and skill across a range of visual arts studio areas. At the same time, they will examine the importance of the visual arts in children's lives and education, the nature of authentic learning, reflective practice, advocacy, forms of representation, gallery responses, as well the integration into other learning areas. Current research, theory and resources, including IT, will support this unit.

Prerequisite Rule

Must pass 1 unit from AED1260, AED2260 and 1 unit from AED2240, AED3240

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate collaborative studio and visual arts responding experiences.
  2. Comprehend the nature of authentic learning and reflective practice in visual arts.
  3. Understand the role and value of visual arts in children's lives and education.
  4. Understand the teacher's responsibilities in terms of authentic learning opportunities and presentation of the visual arts education advocacy.
  5. Comprehend the way research, technology and society influence visual arts education.
  6. Demonstrate a diverse range of visual arts competencies.

Unit Content

  1. Practical visual arts experiences to develop studio and responding competencies.
  2. Creating healthy, safe, practical and stimulating work environments.
  3. Visual arts education theory and methodology used in primary education.
  4. Presentation and promotion of the visual arts in primary education.
  5. Integrated approaches to the visual arts suitable for primary children.

Additional Learning Experience Information

This unit will comprise a series of studio workshops, a gallery visit, reflective tasks, collaborative activities, online inquiry and independent tasks.
