Description

In this unit students will investigate and analyse contemporary pedagogical approaches in music education within the Arts learning area. At the same time, they will research and critically reflect upon the value of the Arts in children's lives and education. Students will also critically analyse the nature of authentic learning and self-reflective practice, advocacy, forms of presentation and integration of the arts. Students will be given the opportunity to analyse and synthesise abstract musical concepts to create and communicate meaningful musical compositions.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate mastery of music literacy for the communication of abstract ideas.
  2. Critically reflect upon social and pedagogical values for the participation of interconnected music experiences.
  3. Create and compose meaningful musical arrangements for children.
  4. Synthesise current research to create integrated learning experiences for children.
  5. Critically reflect on the value of music aesthetic experiences for children.

Unit Content

  1. Creative approaches to the creation and manipulation of abstract ideas.
  2. Critical examination of music theory and methodology used in primary and early childhood.
  3. Practical experiences in vocal production/singing, music arrangement and performance.
  4. Investigation of current research and curriculum documents relating to integrated pedagogical approaches to music education.
  5. Investigation of the aesthetic value of music and the arts.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Seminars, structured activities, discussions and/or online learning activities.
