Description

In this unit, students will work collaboratively from a practical and experiential drama focus to develop confidence, understanding and skills in performance and stagecraft. Concurrently, students will critically reflect on the role of the Arts in children's lives and education and the value of Arts integration. Students will be given the opportunity to analyse and synthesise abstract drama concepts to create and communicate meaningful performance work to an authentic audience. The work will be supported through the investigation and analysis of historical and contemporary pedagogical approaches in drama education.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Research and apply a range of skills in performance and stagecraft.
  2. Critically analyse and collaborate in an interconnected Arts experience.
  3. Investigate, analyse and justify the relationship of drama education in teaching and learning processes.
  4. Reflect critically on aesthetic Arts' experiences and justify their value for students in education.

  1. Written and devised texts as a means of interacting and communicating with authentic audiences.
  2. Performance components of basic theatrical conventions.
  3. Teacher/actor as performer, including use of voice, movement and imagination.
  4. Historical and contemporary approaches to drama theory and methodology used in education.
  5. Integrated approaches to the Arts in education.

WIL - Field Experience

Students experience an environment where they observe and/or participate in the application of theoretical knowledge and skills in a professional setting, under the supervision of an expert or professional in the field. Examples include study tours, observation, shadowing, fieldwork, industry tours.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Workshops based on creative and collaborative learning processes and self-devised performance work research. Application of performance skills and arts research and knowledge demonstrated in a practical performance to be presented to children on-campus or in a school setting.

Academic Integrity

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
