Description

This unit will investigate female clinical reproductive anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, and will introduce students to the concepts of human fecundity and cumulative pregnancy rates. Beginning with normal anatomy and physiology the unit will progress to investigations into the pathophysiology associated with infertility including idiopathic and infectious diseases that result in infertility. Embryological development following implantation will be examined in depth. Practical sessions will include the assay of human female reproductive hormones, and the aseptic recovery and culture of animal oocytes.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of gross and microscopic anatomy of the female reproductive system normal physiological function to levels of fertility and fecundity.
  2. Correlate abnormalities in gross and microscopic anatomy and function [pathophysiology] in the female reproductive systems to issues of infertility.
  3. Investigate additional causes of female infertility, including major microbiological and viral infections.
  4. Correlate the major embryological developmental stages with specific factors that result in failure of pregnancy

Unit Content

  1. Female reproductive anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology.
  2. Female fertility, fecundity and infertility.
  3. Idiopathic and disease states and infertility.
  4. Major embryological developmental stages in pregnancy.
  5. Pre-implantation embryological development from ovulation to implantation.
