Description

This unit will explore male clinical reproductive anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, and will introduce students to the concepts of human fecundity and infertility. Beginning with normal parameters the unit will then investigate the pathophysiology associated with male infertility including idiopathic and infectious diseases that result in infertility. Semen analysis and allied techniques will be the main focus of investigation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of normal anatomy and physiology of the male reproductive systems to levels of fertility and fecundity
  2. Correlate abnormalities in anatomy and function [pathophysiology] in the male reproductive system to issues of infertility.
  3. Investigate additional causes of male infertility including microbial and viral infections
  4. Apply the theoretical principles of semen analysis to laboratory practice.

Unit Content

  1. Male reproductive anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology.
  2. Male fertility and fecundity.
  3. Relationships of idiopathic and disease states to infertility.
  4. Spermatozoa and semen formation and their analysis.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
