Description

This unit will explore the underlying principles of cryopreservation, and the specialised techniques used to slow-freeze and vitrify gametes and embryos. The procedures involved in the care of stored materials and the management of the cryobank will be examined in detail.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically analyse the theoretical principles of cryopreservation
  2. Demonstrate the ability to apply theoretical principles to the cryopreservation of gametes and embryos in laboratory practice
  3. Critically evaluate the key components in the management of a cryobank and examine and evaluate new techniques.
  4. Evaluate the regulatory, legislative and clinical requirements involved in the transport of stored human reproductive tissues.
  5. Identify the various strategies employed in the timing of insemination and embryo transfer using thawed sperm and embryos.

Unit Content

  1. Principles of cryopreservation.
  2. Cryopreservation equipment and techniques for sperm, oocytes and embryos.
  3. Management of a cryobank.
  4. Transportation of stored tissues.
  5. Timing of sperm insemination and embryo transfers.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
