Description

This unit will focus on the quality management of an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) clinical laboratory and will include the calibration and assessment of precision and accuracy of essential equipment; staff training and competency records; development and maintenance of records and controlled documents; and the traceability of gametes and embryos. Implementation of internal quality control in the laboratory and participation in external quality assurance programmes will also be undertaken. All aspects of critical criteria and good practice criteria required for Certification against the current Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee (RTAC) Code of Practice (Australia/New Zealand and International Editions) will be examined.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the fundamental principles of quality management and accreditation as applied to ART.
  2. Critically evaluate the various methods of calibrating and verifying essential equipment.
  3. Utilise quality management techniques that demonstrate staff competency through formalised training and assessment.
  4. Implement the methods used to ensure traceability of gametes during handling, processing and culture.
  5. Apply internal quality control and external quality assurance techniques to the assessment of gametes and embryos as necessary for running an IVF clinic.
  6. Identify and critique the criteria required for Certification against the current RTAC Codes of Practice.
