Description

This unit will investigate the legal and ethical requirements pertaining to the use of assisted reproductive technologies. This will include an examination of the impact of culture and religion on attitudes towards Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). Effective communication with patients relating to ART treatment outcomes will also be addressed. Students will plan, execute and report on an ART-related research project.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically analyse and articulate arguments relating to controversial scientific, moral and ethical issues surrounding ART.
  2. Appropriately apply knowledge of the consenting process for the receipt, handling and utilisation of gametes in alignment with State and Federal legislation and between-patient consent.
  3. Develop and demonstrate empathetic and clear strategies for listening to patients while imparting news.
  4. Execute a research project and articulate to peers the research proposal, its methodology, data analysis and findings.

  1. Legal and ethical issues in ART.
  2. ART and the significance of consent.
  3. Communication with patients on sensitive ART issues and outcomes.
  4. Preparation and presentation of a research proposal and findings.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
