This unit involves a final professional experience placement in a school/centre and includes an on-campus preparation component prior to the placement. Successful completion of on-campus tasks is a pre-requisite for the practicum. During the placement students work under the guidance of mentor teachers while engaging in a process of professional development, and have the opportunity to make well-informed connections between theory and practice. The unit takes the form of an extended block experience for the equivalent of one teaching term. The assessment criteria are further detailed in the professional experience guidelines appropriate to this professional experience. By the conclusion of the final professional experience students are required to demonstrate the competency level of a beginning teacher. Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.
School/Centre based professional experience The teaching and learning processes in this unit model participatory and co-operative learning strategies used by effective learners. Students are expected to meet an attendance requirement of 80% of lectures, workshops, tutorials and/or online teaching and learning processes and activities. Students are also expected to complete 5 planning visits to their schools in preparation for the practicum. Students who do not meet the minimum requirements for attendance and engagement may have their placement withdrawn. Students who find themselves in a personal situation where they are unable to participate should discuss the matter with their Unit Coordinator. Unit information is available to students via the ATP4440 Blackboard Site. The Department of Education Western Australia and cooperating non-government schools/centres have the right to determine fit and proper persons to enter and practise in schools/centres. For these reasons, all Pre-service Teachers 18 years of age and over will be required to have a current Department of Education Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) and a current Working with Children Check (WWCC), or the equivalent clearance issued by the relevant State authority before commencing this period of Professional Practice. Students must pass the assessments for the practicum in order to pass the unit. ATP4440 is a designated unit, defined in the Universitys Admission, Enrolment and Academic Progress Rules as: a unit or unit of competency which a Faculty Board has designated as a fundamental course requirement and may only be attempted once, unless otherwise decided by the relevant Board of Examiners. It involves a professional practice experience. University Rule 4.9.6 states: Where a student has failed a Designated Unit, the student shall be excluded from the course unless otherwise determined by the Board of Examiners, and the student's academic progression status will be excluded. To demonstrate professionalism and respect for industry partners, students must abide by the professional standards set out in the ECU Student Charter and comply with the university policies and rules. School Professional Practice agreements dictate that the student will attend the placement on a full time basis and meet the attendance requirements and professional expectations of the particular placement. The student is to supply a medical certificate for any absences. Where absences exceed twenty per cent of the scheduled Professional Practice, progress in the Professional Practice will be determined by the relevant academic staff member after consultation with relevant school personnel. Pre-service teachers can be withdrawn from the school and the Professional Practice terminated at the request of the host school Principal/Centre Director. This termination will result in a Fail grade for this unit. Pre-service Teachers can also be withdrawn from the placement at the discretion of the Associate Dean (Discipline).

This unit involves a final professional experience placement in a school/centre and includes an on-campus preparation component prior to the placement. The assessment criteria are further detailed in the professional experience guidelines appropriate to this professional experience. By the conclusion of the final professional experience students are required to demonstrate the competency level of a beginning teacher. Designated unit: This practicum unit is deemed to be a fundamental course requirement and may only be attempted once unless otherwise determined by Board of Examiners. Failure to pass these units may result in exclusion from the course.
Generally, host Schools and Centres require that the pre-service teachers attend the placement on a full-time basis and otherwise meet their specific attendance requirements of the particular placement. There is limited scope for ECU to negotiate any deviations from these requirements.

Pre-Service Teachers are expected to participate in all lectures, workshops, tutorials and/or online teaching and learning processes. During the placement, it is imperative that Pre-Service Teachers demonstrate professionalism and respect for industry partners at all times. Pre-Service Teachers must abide by the professional standards set out in the ECU Student Code of Conduct and comply with the applicable University policies and rules. All Pre-Service Teachers 18 years of age and over will be required to have a current Department of Education Nationally Coordinated Criminal History check (NCCHC) and a current Working with Children Check, or the equivalent clearance issued by the relevant State authority before commencing this Professional Practice. The host School/Centre has absolute discretion to terminate the Pre-Service Teachers placement prior to completion of the placement. Situations where this discretion has been exercised are typically where the School/Centre has had concerns about Pre-Service Teacher's conduct or performance. ECU may also withdraw a Pre-Service Teacher from placement in certain circumstances. Early termination or withdrawal from the professional practice placement may result in a Fail grade for this unit.
