Description

This is a culmination of the major where students apply skills and knowledge to produce a major journalism/broadcast project or body of work. Students will take ownership of their work, choosing both the topic and the platform/s through which it will be presented in consultation with the supervising staff. Students will apply their research, newsgathering, writing, editing, presentation, technical and problem solving skills to produce a multi-faceted project of their choice, or aligned with team project. The unit will focus on developing entrepreneurial skills to engage audiences and convince editors and publishers of their capabilities.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have passed BDJ1000, BDJ2100, BDJ3350

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Develop production and presentation skills.
  2. Evaluate a variety of sources in order to identify and explore topics for the project.
  3. Critically explain and justify approach to selection of elements of the project.
  4. Produce a substantial piece of journalism that complies with legal and professional standards.
  5. Engage in relevant entrepreneurial initiatives and projects, as well as content creation productions.

Unit Content

  1. Justify decisions in planning a journalism or broadcast news project including finding a subject, sourcing selection and relevant research.
  2. Implement the plan according to ethical and professional standards.
  3. Apply previous learning to solve problems as they arise.
  4. Appraise the project’s end product and process.

Additional Learning Experience Information

This unit will be delivered using technology enhanced learning, a learner-centered approach. Lectures are used to introduce the central concepts that are relevant in understanding t he principles and practices of business. They involve a blend of experiences including interactive presentations, videos and small group discussions. Tutorials provide students with the opportunity to further discuss and apply the concepts covered in lectures and readings. Activities focus on small group work, designed to develop communication skills, content creation and critical thinking and teamwork. <br><br> Stimulated work environment provides students with opportunities to use equipment or practice that is standard in industry. Assessment methods for on-campus provide students with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their achievement of the unit learning outcomes. Central to technology-enhanced learning is completing self-directed activities outside of class contact time. These preparatory activities introduce students to initial, relatable conceptions of the topics, which are reinforced through lectures, tutorials and online interactions. Assessment methods for on-campus study provide students with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their achievement of the unit learning outcomes.
