Description

This unit will assist students to develop the key employability skills that will help them to prepare for future employment. Skills core to the unit include: working effectively with others; self-awareness; self-management; and, developing professionalism. On an individual level, there is a focus on self-awareness and self-management in career planning and development. Students will gain hands-on experience with resume writing and adapting resumes to different job specifications through addressing selection criteria and, customising cover letters. Further, students will engage with a variety of interview techniques and learn how to prepare for different types of interview situations. At an organisational level, the focus of the unit is on working effectively with others and developing professionalism through time, task and goal management to elicit efficiency, drive and multi tasking capability. Students will develop a more advanced understanding of the process of implementing employability skills in global business contexts by undertaking projects that develop team-working skills and a cross-cultural outlook.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Construct portfolio elements to demonstrate the development of professionalism and competence with resumes, application types, addressing selection criteria and interview scenarios.
  2. Develop self-management skills in order to enhance self-efficacy, stress tolerance and work life balance; and,
  3. Reflect on and evaluate personal traits, strengths and weaknesses in order to demonstrate when and how to build, maintain and manage relationships.
  4. Work effectively with others by applying task collaboration, teamwork, social intelligence and conflict resolution skills.

  2. Cross cultural business etiquette.
  3. Interview skills and strategies.
  4. Personal brand through professional social media presence.
  5. Personal traits, strengths, weaknesses, motivations and interests.
  6. Resumes and cover letters.
  7. Self-management, self-efficacy, stress tolerance, work-life balance.
  8. Social intelligence.
  9. Time, goal and task management.
  10. Working effectively with others.

Additional Learning Experience Information

On campus students participate in this unit through blended learning and weekly three-hour seminars. Off-campus students will access the unit through the Blackboard Learning Management System. Regular online access is required. The teaching and learning approach is student-centred with practical activities to develop key employability skills. Core skills for this unit include: working effectively with others; self-awareness; self-management; and developing professionalism. This unit provides for engaged teaching and learning through integration of guest speakers who value-add to knowledge of the application of employability skills in the work place. As the unit does not have an exam, students must commit to high levels of participation and collaboration throughout the semester.
