The unit provides supervisory guidance for the first and development stage of a major research project into the student's chosen area of research. It is the first of two consecutive units that provide an opportunity for students to choose and refine a topic for research including the preparation of a formal written project proposal that articulates the research for an academic context. The research can be an entirely theoretical or historical study, or it can be a plan for research that relates to a correlating practical project. Students will develop and understanding of how to design and appropriate research approach or methodology and how to select and analyse appropriate resources including books, articles and artworks, as appropriate.
