Description

The unit is the second of two consecutive units that provide an opportunity for students to undertake a major independent research project. It allows students to articulate and refine a research topic of their choice, then provides them with the support to conduct that research independently but with guidance in finding appropriate resources and existing literature to inform their knowledge and understanding. The unit develops the student's capacity to analyse and synthesise information from a range of sources including theoretical and historical resources as well as artworks. Students will, through appropriate research, develop an academic thesis or exegesis if their work relates to a practical arts project conducted concurrently.

Students must pass 1 unit from BPA3115

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. Independently conduct a major research project.
2. Develop, synthesise, and fully interrogate complex ideas and concepts.
3. Apply an appropriate research methodology in the investigation of a research topic.
4. Communicate complex ideas clearly and convincingly in an academic context.

Unit Content

1. Communication skills in the discussion of contemporary arts practice.
2. Articulating and refining a research topic.
3. Analysing and synthesising information from a range of resources, including art works as well as books, articles and other published materials or resources.
4. Exploration of various sources for the development of appropriate theoretical concepts.
5. Defining and outlining research methodology appropriate to the chosen topic.
6. Exploration of different contextual impacts on an area of study including cultural, socio-politics, financial or environmental factors.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
