Description

This unit provides students with a practical introduction to field cameras and associated equipment, and to the television studio and control room. This includes equipment, procedures, personnel, and associated software. Students develop, through practice, an understanding of the components of television production, camera operation, video-editing, programming and presentation and use these skills to prepare a range of audio/visual materials.

Must pass 1 unit from BRO5111

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Develop program content using industry standard pre-production and documentation.
  2. Operate digital video-editing equipment.
  3. Operate portable field cameras and sound equipment.
  4. Operate typical television studio equipment and software.
  5. Produce programs.

Unit Content

  1. Basic lighting technique.
  2. Camera technique and shot composition.
  3. Production planning and documentation.
  4. Story-telling skills using vision & dialogue.
  5. TV sound, microphone technique and sound monitoring.
  6. TV studio crew and their roles.
  7. The control room and its equipment.
  8. The television studio and its equipment.
  9. Video recording and non-linear editing.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures, workshops, practical exercises and feedback following formal instruction.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant School Progression Panel.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.

Description

This unit provides students with a practical introduction to field cameras and associated equipment, and to the television studio and control room. Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Students will undertake practicum during the hours laid down by their host media company and these may occur at times outside the identified semester weeks. Additionally, pre-identified media practicum periods may change with minimal notice to students due to circumstances outside the control of the School.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Develop program content using industry standard pre-production and documentation.
  2. Operate typical television studio equipment and software.
  3. Originate ideas and use creative judgement to produce programs
  4. Proficient operation of equipment involved in the filming and editing of content for television, both in the field and the studio.
  5. Understand the principles and practice of editing and production of footage using contemporary software.
