Description

In this unit students complete a work-based project designed to enhance organisational capability within a public, private or non-profit organisation under academic and industry supervision. The aim of the unit is to assist students in developing a practical appreciation of their field of study through integrating the material covered in the discipline course and applying their knowledge and skills to unstructured, authentic problems in work settings. To accomplish this aim, students complete a specific discipline based project over the entire semester on a topic negotiated between the student, academic supervisor and the industry supervisor(s) within the host organisation. The project must focus on the demonstration of selected competencies as relevant to the student's particular management discipline (management, marketing, project management, human resource management). Host organisations will be secured through relevant ECU staff, and/or the Unit Coordinator, or as a result of pre-approved networking and contacts developed by the student. Students will not be paid for the work they undertake. Enrolment into this unit is by application ONLY and enrolment into the course will not guarantee a place. Students are required to submit a current Resume, a statement addressing their suitability and may be required to attend an interview. Students must also have a minimum course Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 65 for their application to be considered. As this unit focuses on the personal and professional development of the individual, no RPL will be considered for this unit.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have completed a minimum of 60 credit points.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply advanced discipline based skills, knowledge, practices and behaviours in the context of the organisation and a specific project task.
  2. Generate and evaluate complex ideas, information and concepts in the specific management discipline.
  3. Design and deliver a business strategy initiative that enhances organisational capability.
  4. Critically reflect on current capability and identify future professional development needs.

Unit Content

  1. Completion of at least 100 hours working in a discipline-relevant program of work in an approved work environment.
  2. Professional conduct in the workplace.
  3. Interacting, collaborating and networking with professionals in an Australian work environment.
  4. Demonstrate application of disciplinary knowledge and non-technical skills in a professional work environment.
  5. Self-assessment and critical reflection of performance and contribution to the professional work environment.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students must complete at least 100 hours either in an approved work environment within a public, private or non-profit organisation or within their own study environment working on their specific discipline-relevant project. Students will be required to participate in an induction on the requirements and procedures for completing a work placement, including documentation and risk management compliance. Students will also be required to attend a minimum of two additional on-campus sessions during semester for debriefing and feedback purposes. In between these sessions, students will work independently to undertake their project and will be expected to communicate regularly and consult with the Unit Coordinator, in face to face meetings or by phone or through the unit's Blackboard site. Through undertaking their project, students will be expected to effectively perform and meet the needs of their assigned organisation, as well as complete the units assessment requirements. Students are expected to work autonomously, show initiative and generate ideas relating to their assigned tasks in the workplace. Host supervisors and the unit coordinator will liaise on student progress towards achieving learning outcomes during the project period.
