Description

In this unit students complete a work-based, consulting, or applied research project designed to enhance organisational, entrepreneurial and innovative capability within an organisation in the private, public or not-for-profit sectors under academic and/or industry supervision. The aim of the unit is to assist students in developing a practical appreciation of their field of study through integrating the material covered in the discipline course and applying their knowledge and skills to unstructured, authentic problems in work settings. To accomplish this aim, students complete a specific discipline based project over the entire semester on a topic negotiated between the student, academic supervisor and/ or the industry specialists with the client organisation. The project must focus on the demonstration of selected competencies as relevant to the student's particular course or specialisation.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have completed a minimum of 60 credit points.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. Apply advanced discipline based skills, knowledge, practices and behaviours in the context of the organisation and a specific project task.
2. Generate and evaluate complex ideas, information and concepts in the specific management discipline.
3. Design and deliver a business strategy, innovation, enhancement, or improvement initiative that enhances organisational capability.
4. Critically reflect on current capability and identify future professional development needs.

Unit Content

1. Recognise and assess strategic opportunities;
2. Execute processes required to conduct professional quality industry and market analysis;
3. Apply fact-based and intuitive abilities to foresee and manage strategic implementation and control issues;

Additional Learning Experience Information

This unit provides an applied learning experience that consolidates learning in the postgraduate program as well as producing useful results for real organisations. Students must complete their project on an approved public, private or non-profit organisation or within their own work or study environment working on their specific discipline-relevant project. The unit is highly interactive and will be conducted under the guidance of both academics and industry specialists. The unit aims to integrate knowledge acquired over each students degree studies and, the application of that knowledge to live client / industry engagements, and resulting in the provision of evidence-supported business solutions that are actionable. The teaching methods include seminars, group discussion using creative and critical thinking techniques, and collaboration with business professionals and practitioners from Australia and around the world. Students will be required to present their work in progress to an independent advisory panel for feedback and comments as a part of their learning experience. Management Project clients will be provided with an interim research presentation, and a final strategic plan and presentation. Compulsory classroom seminars will all contribute to the sequential building of the various client deliverables as this unit relies upon dynamic interaction with a live and often changeable client engagement context. In between these sessions, students will work independently to undertake their project and will be expected to communicate regularly and consult with the Unit Coordinator, in face to face meetings or by phone or through the unit's Blackboard site. Through undertaking their project, students will be expected to effectively perform and meet the needs of their assigned organisation, as well as complete the unit's assessment requirements. Students are expected to work collaboratively in groups, autonomously, show initiative and generate ideas relating to their assigned tasks in the workplace. Industry specialists and the unit coordinator will liaise on student progress towards achieving learning outcomes during the project period. Students may be required to participate in an induction on the requirements and procedures for completing a work-based project, including documentation and risk management compliance.
