Description

The unit requires students to work for between 100 and 150 hours on pre-defined learning outcomes at an advanced level in a public, private or not-for-profit organisation. This will enable students to develop a broad range of work-related skills that will enhance their graduate capabilities. Students will also be required to take significant responsibility for their own learning outcomes. The aim of the unit is to assist students in developing a practical appreciation of their field of study through integrating the material covered in the discipline course and applying their knowledge and skills to unstructured, authentic problems in work settings. Host organisations will be secured through the Work Placement Coordinator, or as a result of pre-approved networking and contacts developed by the student. Enrolment into this unit is by application ONLY. Students are required to submit a current Resume, a statement addressing their suitability and may be required to attend an interview. Students must also have a minimum course Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 65 to be considered. As this unit focuses on the personal and professional development of the individual, no RPL will be considered for this unit.

Summer or Winter Semester: Students enrolled into summer or winter semesters will be required to source their own work placement opportunity.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply advanced discipline based skills, knowledge, practices and behaviours in the context of the host organisation.
  2. Illustrate evidence of professional conduct and ethical behaviour in the workplace.
  3. Synthesise information to produce a coherent and professional skills portfolio.
  4. Critically reflect on current capability and identify future professional development needs.

Unit Content

  1. Completion of between 100 and 150 hours working in a discipline-relevant program of work in an approved work environment.
  2. Professional conduct in the workplace.
  3. Interacting, collaborating and networking with professionals in an Australian work environment.
  4. Demonstrate advanced application of disciplinary knowledge and non-technical skills in a professional work environment.
  5. Self-assessment and critical reflection of performance and contribution to the professional work environment.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students must complete between 100 and 150 hours in an approved work environment within a public, private or non-profit organisation. Some of this work may occur on campus, in a workplace, or wherever appropriate to fulfil the needs of the defined program of work. Students will be required to participate in an induction on the requirements and procedures for completing a work placement, including documentation and risk management compliance. Students may also be required to attend additional on-campus sessions during semester for debriefing and feedback purposes. Students will need to maintain regular email contact and participate in face-to-face and/or telephone meetings with the Unit Coordinator/Lecturer if required. Students will be expected to effectively perform in the workplace to meet the needs of the organisation, as well as complete the units assessment requirements. Students are expected to work autonomously, show initiative and generate ideas relating to their assigned tasks in the workplace. Host supervisors and the unit coordinator will liaise on student progress towards achieving learning outcomes during the placement period.
