Description

This unit provides advanced students with the opportunity to undertake supervised work in a professional capacity. Students are responsible for finding the placement. Reporting back to the unit tutor, students undertake their attachment to a relevant workplace. The number of hours worked each week is negotiated between the student and workplace supervisor. A learning contract, entered into by student, workplace supervisor and tutor determines the specific content and teaching and learning processes, together with the skills and competencies to be acquired and demonstrated. A personal career-focused resume and portfolio will be developed by the student to reflect the professional experience.

Prerequisite Rule

Course average of 70% or higher, plus an informal interview determined by the unit coordinator

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Use professional experience to identify requisite skills and prepare resumes and job applications in a relevant industry.
  2. Make a substantial professional contribution to a given work environment.
  3. Demonstrate the skills required by the workplace.
  4. Display initiative, reliability and competence in their duties.

Unit Content

  1. Negotiate an appropriate placement relevant to the major in with they are undertaking with an agency/organisation and the unit tutor.
  2. Develop an individual learning contract between the student, the workplace supervisor and the unit tutor based on the skills and competencies expected in the workplace.
  3. Complete a placement requiring 120 hours with agency/organisation to be spent on defined tasks or project, similar to that required of a graduate employee.
  4. Working collaboratively with peers, supervisors and clients to achieve work outcomes.
  5. Appropriate use of industry standard equipment, software and business systems.
  6. Prepare a report on the placement based on learning experiences and undertaking a critical self-assessment of their strengths and weaknesses in relation to the work environment, along with a portfolio reflecting the work they have undertaken.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Professional placement work experience of 120 hours. The scope and form of the placement will be agreed upon by the student, agency/organisation and unit tutor prior to the commencement of the placement. The placement will be undertaken at times convenient to the agency/organisation and the student, and will be supervised primarily by the organisation.
