Description

This unit provides advanced students with the opportunity to undertake supervised work in a professional capacity. Students are responsible for finding the placement. Reporting back to the unit tutor, students undertake their attachment to a relevant workplace. The number of hours worked each week is negotiated between the student and workplace supervisor. A learning contract, entered into by student, workplace supervisor and tutor determines the specific content and teaching and learning processes, together with the skills and competencies to be acquired and demonstrated. A personal career-focused resume and portfolio will be developed by the student to reflect the professional experience.

Prerequisite Rule

Course average of 70% or higher, plus an informal interview determined by the unit coordinator

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Identify and negotiate an appropriate professional placement with an agency/organisation and the unit tutor, relevant to the area of study.
  2. Utilise experience, initiative and requisite skills when designing resumes and job applications relevant to the professional placement and industry.
  3. Create an individual learning agreement between the student, the professional placement supervisor and the unit tutor based on the skills and competencies expected in the workplace and industry.
  4. Critically reflect upon learning experiences, undertaking a self-assessment of own workplace strengths and weaknesses.
  5. Analyse and evaluate own workplace outputs, collaboration, reliability, competence and initiative in creating a substantial professional contribution in the workplace.

Unit Content

  1. Presentation skills.
  2. Reflective practice and evaluation of workplace performance.
  3. Learning plan design.
  4. Implementation strategies and techniques appropriate to the workplace.
  5. Appropriate use of industry standard equipment, software and business systems.
  6. Industry standards including workplace policies, procedures and best practices.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Professional placement work experience of 120 hours. The scope and form of the placement will be agreed upon by the student, agency/organisation and unit tutor prior to the commencement of the placement. The placement will be undertaken at times convenient to the agency/organisation and the student, and will be supervised primarily by the organisation.
