Description
This unit is an introduction to the study of written texts with particular emphasis on fiction and poetry. Students will be encouraged to examine their own reading practices and will be introduced to theoretical perspectives which will assist in developing critical awareness.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
- Apply theoretical tools to texts.
- Identify the relationship between text, cultural context and reader.
- Produce written documents that meet academic standards.
- Recognise the codes and conventions associated with particular genres and styles.
- Recognise the processes in the construction of meaning.
Unit Content
- Critically analyse literary works in different genres and styles.
- Develop an understanding of narrative devices and skills for close reading of literary works.
- Integrate context into understanding literary works and their meanings.
- Introduction to strategies for reading a variety of literary texts, including poetry, short stories and dramatic works.
Learning Experience
Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.
